My former (and is former because of the maltese) roommate had a male dog and tried everything. I bought a bark collar so that I could get sleep when my roommate wasn't home. She hated me for it - but nothing else worked. I had to ask her to move out because of that and other issues with the dog. I gave her the collar when she left. She finally resorted to using a it in order to keep from being evicted (again) because of the dog. They are yappy, high maintenance dogs.
