ANY TIPS ON TAKING A LONG ROAD TRIP WITH A DOG?

I will be going from Illinois to Arkansas with my family. We have been bringing along the dog. He is a small 1 year old maltese. He loves car rides but the furthest he has left was 2 hours. Any tips? I devise on carrying him lay with me instead of being in his cage. Should he eat in the car? Drink lots of water? What about when he has to go to the lavatory and we have been far from the rest end place. What if he gets car sick? Should i give him something to have him nap the approach there?

Do not feed him before you go. Wait until you stop for the night.
Stop every 2-3 hours at a rest area for a potty break.
Ofter water.
You can get some pills from the vet to calm him or try DAP spray, also from your vet.
Don’t feed him because he could get car sick.
You could put him in a cage for some of the time, and then hold him the rest of the time so he can sleep.
Let him drink water if he will in the car.
Does he behave well at home, or is he sometimes wild?
Take him on a walk before you leave so he’s not as wild.
Does your dog usually get car sick? I have one dog that used to when she was younger. We had to evacuate for a hurricane with her once and it was a 16 hour drive. Because she got car sick easily, I didn’t feed her or anything. She still got car sick a few times though. Just make sure you bring paper towels, baby wipes, and trash bags/grocery bags to throw everything away in…..if your dog is prone to getting car sick, that is.
If he’s not at all (one of my dogs isnt) you can probably feed him and water him like normal. Take him out to potty when you guys stop for a break, or every few hours. Give him his water at that time. If he has to go potty when you guys are far from the rest place, pull over on the side of the road.
If you feel you need to give him something to make him calm for the trip, go to your vet. My dogs just sleep most of the time when they’re in the car. When they’re awake one likes to stick her head out the window and the other plays with his toys.
