Please buy the pup from a reputable breeder, they will be able to answer all of your questions. Better yet, why don’t you adopt a dog from your local shelter/rescue. If you buy from a breeder, please be sure that the parents have had all of their health clearances. You do know that a decent dog, from a reputable breeder will cost you up to $1500.00? Anything much less than that will be a poorly bred runt from an unreputable breeder.

Please research all of these topic better before you purchase a puppy. They are no small joke and take lots of time/money/love.

First things first. In my experiences most smaller breeds tend to bark more then the larger dogs becuase they are small and feel threatened more often.

Second. Keeping you puppy on a mainstream dog food brand would be the best way to keep him in good health. I good dry kibble is all a dog needs to be healthy and happy.

Grooming is a wide subject as far as what they CAN and what they NEED. My dogs enjoy weekly or more often brush outs, and then to the groomers atleast twice a year for a full shave.

Potty Training is going to be work first off. It will take lots of patients and hard work before you see any positives from your work. First off are you training him to go outside or on a pad? It starts with repetition, any time you see him/her start to go you need to move them to where you want, ie. the pad or outside. once they have gone outside POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT like a plain cheerio and lots of praises. You want your puppy to WANT to go where you designate. There are going to be lots of messes in the house, but just remember it is not her/his fault and yelling will not make anything better.

If you are keeping him in your bedroom you will need to puppy proof that room. Meaning all wires, outlets, or anything else he could chew on and ingest needs to be picked up and secured. If you will be gone for long periods of time invest in a crate for him.

I agree with the person above me, make sure you buy from a reputable breeder. And rescuing a dog is a great thing to do, but may not be for everyone. But only get a dog from either a REPUTABLE breeder or a shelter.

My friend had a beautiful maltese boy from a backyard breeder - she took him home when he was around 12 weeks old, and the next month they found that he had cancer. They spent over $4000 on surgery and the poor dog still died. Yes, a dog from a reputable breeder may cost more initially, but in the long run, one from an irresponsible breeder will be piling up tons more.

Malteses are potty trained in the same method other dogs are trained! Some people have different ways of potty training than others. I have heard that using a crate is the best way - first buy a crate for your puppy as his own little “home” and bed (you could place the crate in your room!). Young dogs will not be able to “hold it”, but they do have an instinct that advises them not to do their business in the same little place where they sleep and sometimes play and eat. You have to watch for signs - if it seems like your puppy is about to go to the bathroom, immediately scoop her up and take her outside to the backyard. Take her out to pee before and after she eats and sleeps, and at night, take her out every half an hour to an hour or so… don’t worry, soon she WILL be able to hold it and the time intervals will lengthen until she finally learns to hold it all through the night and to sit at the door when she needs to go.

I also know of some people who would ring a bell whenever they take their puppy/dog outside to go to the bathroom - their dogs soon catch on and whenever they need to go, they will ring the bell. However, they also may figure out that bell = trip outside and ring it just to be able to romp around in the backyard and play.

This is only one method of potty training, and I am definitely not saying this is the best. Just adding my two cents… hope it helps!

Great tips by everyone…..But your statement - (No dogs allowed) - What do you mean?

Do you live in a building that doesn’t allow dogs? Then don’t get one until you move out. OR Do you live with your parents and they agree to let you have a dog if he is regulated to your bedroom? Again, don’t do that to a dog - it’s either a member of your family or don’t get one. Especially if you might be forced to give it up or relinquish it to the pound because you can not keep it. You need to think that you will have this dog for the next 15 years

Yes - Maltese bark, grooming should be weekly or have the dog kept in a puppy clip, crate-training is “the” method for potty-training.
