HOW MUCH TO FEED MALTESE PUPPY?

maltese puppy
buddrfly421 asked:

I have a 3 month old maltese lady puppy. Im not certain how most to feed her? I customarily give her a small some-more afterwards a handful twice a day but she regularly seems starving. As shortly as she gets fed she scarfs it down. The puppy food bag says 1 crater twice a day..that seems a small most for such a small dog [shes dual pounds!]

u should follow the instructions on the bag. size dosen’t matter in a dog. if she’s hungry, she’s hungry. you’re lucky though! your dog eats dog food. i wish my dogs did.

I have a Boston Terrier and a Yorkie. The Yorkie doesn’t act like he is starving), but, when I first got my Boston Terrier she would do that (like she was starving). So, I gradually started giving her a little more at a time. Try feeding your puppy atleast 3 times a day. Morning, noon and a little in the evening. I did this for a little while she still scarfed it down (once she got used to us). Now I leave food down for her at all times (like I do my Yorkie). Now that she knows it is always there and she knows no one is going to take it from her, she just eats when she gets hungry. This worked for me. One more thing, if you have your puppy inside, make sure you let her out several times a day. This will help her to know that even though she can eat when she wants, it doesn’t give her the right to go on the floor when she needs to potty. I let mine out several times a day and before I go to bed, but just incase, I keep a clean puppy pad down for mine at all times (she don’t like it, she prefers to go outside).
I hope I helped. Good Luck.

The amount of food needed for each animal depends on many things (just like with humans). You need to take into account her activity level, and food needed for adequate growth. It is often best to feed puppies 3 times a day because they are growing and manage to metabolize their feed quite quickly.
You are the best one to judge how much your puppy needs to be fed. Your puppy should have a body condition score of 4-5 out of 9. To assess your dogs body condition you need to lightly palpate over the ribs, you should be able to feel the ribs under a small layer of fat but they shouldn’t be obviously visible. The hips should be palpable but you shouldn’t be able to see all the bony surface of the hips and the dog should have an abdominal tuck meaning it’s abdomen should not be as low as it’s chest (to the ground). I have added a link for you to look at the BCS yourself so you will better be able to assess.
A grown maltese usually weighs around 6 pounds. During the first year it is vital they get a well balanced diet as they are growing up and out. A high quality puppy food is essential for adequate Calcium and Protein.
Try giving her 3 handfuls a day and see if that helps and monitor her BCS, if she gets to heavy, reduce the food and if she is to slim increase accordingly and remember in the first year you will be changing her food amount to maintain her growing needs (the bigger she gets the more she will need).
    Good luck with it all.

Do not follow the instructions on the bag. The best person to tell you the amount of food that you are giving your dog is your vet. Golden rule on feeding dogs is 1c of food per 20lbs of animal. You have to take into account treats, etc during the day.

1/2 to 3/4 cups of food a day is plenty. You can split it in 2 meals which most vets will recommend since she is still a puppy. And use a real cup, not a 16ounce drinking cup. If you start overfeeding her now, you will have an obese Maltese by the time she is 1.

You feed puppies by their weight. You can feed your pup three to four times a day, then when they hit a cetain wieght, you cut down. Puppies are still growing and need the food. I have three dogs and give them 1/2 cup of food per dog, twice a day. But with a pup, you have to make sure she gets whats she needs. The food is always down, but my females act lie they are starving also, and my male is a little gentleman, and lets them eat first.

I sometimes wonder if it is just females who act like that, but then my friends dog (male) eats like he is starving also.

Don’t worry about it, she will be fine. I have heard that a Maltese will be small, so you don’t want her to get over weight, and since she is still young, make sure she gets what she needs. And make sure it’s good dog food. Do not buy Old Roy, no matter what form. I learned that the hard wy. I have heard it is the bottom of the barrel, as far as dog food is concerned. Bad food. My dog lost a lot of her hair, and her eyes watered very badly. And I have also heard that feeding dogs a lot of canned food is not good for them either. Rots there teeth. It is like we are always learning something new about dogs, at least I am. Never thought about this stuff when I was a kid. You just fed the dog and that was it. Now that I have three dogs, and taking care of them myself, I pay more attention to what is good for them, and what isn’t. Good luc with your, and have a nice night.
